Aging
Today I gave a presentation at the local university as part of the history department’s series “Careers in History.” These kinds of things are dear to me from a very personal point of view. While I felt so old standing in front of a lecture hall full of kids who were texting and whatever, it was kind of like coming full circle, because 15 years ago I was one of them, listening to similar talks in the same lecture hall.
The best part was at the end when a few kids came up to talk about volunteering. One kid asked whether it was necessary to have a goal of a library science master’s in order to volunteer in an archives. I said, it probably won’t matter, but what do you want to do?
He said “I’m a philosophy major and I want to get a Ph. D.”
A dime a dozen, those ones, but I guess I find them just as charming as I did back then.
