Tomorrow I’m giving away the first three hats to the chemotherapy cap knitting club at work, which has been named The Knitting Zone! (with exclamation mark). Click below to get the details of each if you’re interested.

This weekend featured another legendary barbecue/karaoke blowout at Brian’s. Almost everyone who reads this blog regularly was there! But before I get to the pictures, a little anecdote on how cultural things can randomly collide:
In my latest frenzy of downloading as much prog rock as I can get my hands on, I stumbled on Jon & Vangelis. That would be Jon Anderson from the group Yes, and Vangelis who wrote the theme to “Chariots of Fire.” They collaborated on some indescribable new-agey rock in the early 1980s. I eventually bought their album “The Friends of Mr. Cairo.”
And in my latest frenzy of checking out books from my local public library, I’m working through some of the classic detective fiction such as Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, a genre I have never before read. I just finished Chandler’s “The Lady in the Lake” which was good, and now I’m working on “The Maltese Falcon.” Well, what do you know, one of the main characters is named Mr. Joel Cairo. On today’s road trip back from Chicago, I cranked the Jon & Vangelis as we crossed the Skyway. Amazingly, the Mr. Cairo is indeed the character from “The Maltese Falcon”! So that explains the gun shots and the pleading lady voiceover at the beginning of the song.
Anyway, here’s a little teaser for you:

I don’t have much to say about crafts right now. This weekend I got about halfway done on my second hat to donate, and some needles I ordered for my baby sweater project arrived.
It turns out Rodney will get to take off about ten days in August, and we’ve got a little dough, so we are thinking of going to Costa Rica. We’d go to Europe but it’s a bit out of our price range right now. Costa Rica can apparently be done nicely on about $25 a day, and the plane tickets are under $500 per person.
I’m looking for information on traditional textiles, yarn, etc. in that country. I don’t think it’s a major industry but I’m still curious. If anyone has suggestions please leave a comment!
I’ve recently learned that there is a large thrift store within a few blocks of where I work and they’re having a big sale this week. I’m going on lunch today to check it out. It’s exciting…I could see spending a few more lunch breaks there in the future if it’s good!
And, the seasonal allergies have made it to my right eye today. It feels like I have gravel stuck in it! It sucks.

I’ve started my second hat for the knitting group at work. Too bad this week I was the only one that showed up besides the two organizers. It seems like there is a lot of apathy or something around here. Midwestern people!

This is a four-ply yarn of 85% cotton, 15% silk, in light blue, lavender, and green. It knits nicely even though the plies (plys?) always want to come apart. So far I haven’t knit into the strands by accident.
In fish tank news, nobody has died. I think we’ve finally hit a normal operating level! Our plants are doing well too.
